Ion Chicu, one of the leaders of the ALTERNATIVE electoral bloc, held a press conference today in Ungheni, where he presented worrying data on the increase in public debt and its effects on the economy and citizens.<\/p>\n
– Public debt almost doubled over four years<\/p>\n
According to Chicu, the national debt has increased from 67 billion lei in 2020 to 127 billion lei in 2024, meaning it has doubled during the PAS government’s term in office. \u201cThis debt is not being repaid by the government, but by every citizen through taxes and duties,\u201d the former prime minister emphasized.<\/p>\n
– More expensive loans and heavier burdens<\/p>\n
Chicu mentioned that in the public debt portfolio, high-interest loans have doubled, while the share of low-interest loans has fallen from 85% to 61%. As a result, in 2023 alone, the Republic of Moldova paid 5.3 billion lei in interest and commissions \u2013 an amount equivalent to the entire annual budget of the municipality of Chi\u0219in\u0103u.<\/p>\n
– Record deficit and bloated bureaucracy<\/p>\n
The leader of the ALTERNATIVE Bloc criticized the increase in spending on the bureaucratic apparatus, noting that the number of civil servants had increased by 80% compared to 2020. At the same time, the budget deficit reached 18 billion lei in 2025, the highest in recent years.<\/p>\n
– Solutions proposed by the ALTERNATIVE Bloc<\/p>\n
Ion Chicu said that his party is proposing solutions to restore financial discipline and create conditions for economic development:<\/p>\n
– reducing unnecessary spending and bureaucracy;<\/p>\n
– stimulating the business environment through tax incentives;<\/p>\n
– attracting investment and relaunching the 18 industrial platforms started in 2020;<\/p>\n
– rational use of borrowed resources for development and infrastructure projects, not for maintaining oversized institutions.<\/p>\n
